Custom inconvenience: About My Books ordered from Amazon Japan

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

I have ordered three books from Amazon Japan last March 19, 2009.

I choose Expedited FedEx delivery so that my orders would arrive here within 3 days. It already took months, so I checked the package tracking and I noticed that my order was hold in Paranaque Post Office. I didn’t receive any notice from the PO.

This is what I have ordered:
* 1 点 Kanji in context [ Reference Book ] ―中・上級学習者のための漢字と語彙 (Reference book)
販売: Amazon.com Int’l Sales, Inc.
* 1 点 Kanji in context [ Workbook Vol. 1 ] ―中・上級学習者のための漢字と語彙 (Workbook vol.1)
販売: Amazon.com Int’l Sales, Inc.
* 1 点 Kanji in context [ Workbook Vol. 2 ] ―中・上級学習者のための漢字と語彙 (Workbook Vol.2) (Kanji in Context Series) (Kanji in Context
販売: Amazon.com Int’l Sales, Inc.

Total is 9,700 yen or 4850 php (2yen/1php) including shipping and other charges.

Those books were always out of stock. So I was always on look out for these books. The moment they were available in Amazon Japan, I immediately ordered without a second thought. Since I also have a plan to take JLPT 3 again this year.

Then when I asked Amazon customer service for what happened to my order. They investigate it and they emailed me this:

Thank you for waiting the reply from Amazon.co.jp.

Regarding your inquiry, I could find out the situation on the shipment for the order #XXX-XXXXXXX-XXXXXXX.

Actually, we had confirm that you had refused to pay the custom tax when the FedEx had tried to deliver it, and they are holding this package then.

The details of the tax:

CUSTOMS FORMS/STAMPS PHP: 315.00
DUTIES AND TAXES PHP: 1,824.00
STORAGE FEE PHP: 826.45
————————-
Total: 2965.45

You may be subject to import duties and taxes, which are levied once a shipment reaches your country. Additional charges
for customs clearance must be borne by you; we have no control over these charges and cannot predict what they may be.

Upon calling the Post Office and confirming the amount Custom was charging me, I decided to cancel my order. They are asking me almost 61% of the total cost of my order!

So I emailed back Amazon Japan about my decision of canceling my order. Here is their reply:

Wednesday, April 29, 2009
Thank you for writing to Amazon.co.jp.

If you want to cancel your order, please contact your local FedEx and let them know that you are willing to refuse the package and return the package to the shipper.

We will process your refund when we receive the package and send confirmation of the refund via e-mail. Refunds are processed within 7 to 14 business days of our receiving.

So I called the PO and tell them that I’m returning back the books to the shipper. And they said they would process it.

I waited for few weeks, then after checking Amazon. It seems that my ordered books was not returned! I called back the PO and heard the worst words I could ever hear. “We are sorry but your books has been incinerated!” Whoa!! They said that the books have been idling for too long in their storage and decided to burn it. Damn! I asked them if there’s no hope to recover it and they said no. Waaaaaa… my books was gone and so is my money. Because of this, I lost the will to continue my study of Nihongo and decided not to take JLPT this December.

After this incident, I fear of ordering online again. This has never been happened before. :(

Ordered Books from Amazon Shipped by JAC

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

So, having my free time occupied by reading lots of different e-books, well mostly, personal development and positive thinking type. I want to own a paperback version of those books that I deemed to be very useful so that I can share it at home. But after my last traumatic experience of ordering online, see my previous post here, I need to find a way of bringing my ordered books to safety :). I learned from reading forums here and there that some are using a reroute system.  So using our favorite search engine, here’s what I think to be a likely candidate:

1. Johnny Air Cargo

2. Manila Forwarder

3. Pobox.ph

4. MyUS.com

5. Xend Express

After reading and analyzing each, I decided to give Johnny Air Cargo (JAC) a try. Since they’ve been operating since 2006 and are still active so I guess they are doing a great job, ne? Hehe. So reading from another blog and verifying in JAC location, I emailed Miss Analyn Diego:

Hello!!

I’m going to order books from Amazon.com and I’m thinking of using Johnny Air Cargo to ship my orders here in Philippines.

What steps should I do? Where do I register?

Thank you.

Surprisingly, she got on me very fast and she replied back this:

Dear (My Name),

There. So I made my purchased at Amazon and ordered these 4 books:

2 of : The Ultimate Secrets of Total Self-Confidence (Revised)

1 of : The Secret of the Soul: Using Out-of-Body Experiences to Understand Our True Nature

1 of : Lucid Dreaming: Gateway to the Inner Self

Ohh, those books sound weird right? Heheh, we’ll I’m weird so there’s nothing unusual on those books  :). The first one, is about personal development and I ordered two because I’m going to give one as a gift to one of my friend. The 2nd and 3rd book is about OBE and Lucid Dreaming. I’ll talk more about those topics later and maybe post some reviews on those books. And by the way, those books are over $25 so shipping is free :).

So those orders was shipped on November 10, 2009.  Using tracking on Amazon it arrived at JAC warehouse on November 15. It was then shipped by JAC from New York to Philippines on November 19. I picked it up then on SM Megamall on November 24. The books are sealed in a hard plastic and put inside of a Amazon box and weight 3 lbs. When I arrived on SM Megamall, I picked it up in its original Amazon box without any sign of tampering. That’s nice eh? I then pay their service and shipping free of around 1300 pesos since it weights 3 lbs. The fee is based on weight by the way.

Overall, I’m happy with JAC service :). I got my books unharmed and I have dealed with their very friendly agents. Oh, even the staffs of JAC at SM Megamall are very accomodating.

I would definitely use their service again in the near future. Ciao! :)
